Certain plants grow as vines exclusively, while others grow only grow as vines when the conditions are right. Both poison ivy and bittersweet can grow as low shrubs when no growth support is not available. They will however become vines if support such as a tree or side of a house is available.

Some vines grow better vertically while others are better suited to spread. When looking for plants to colonize large areas quickly periwinkle and ground ivy are both good choices. Most vines much like other plants do flower.
